The rush. The distractions. The to-do list that keeps getting longer. The schedule that always stays full.

“I just need a break.”

“I’m so busy I can’t even think.”

“When will everything slow down?”

I’m sure at least one of those statements, or maybe ones like it, have entered your thoughts on days or weeks when you just can’t seem to find the time to slow down. With the fast-paced culture we live in, I’m afraid life doesn’t slow down much no matter how much we beg and plead. That’s why it’s so important to intentionally make time to rest. It’s also important to know that rest is not selfish, but it is needed- especially if you don’t want to go through day-to-day life feeling burnt-out and disconnected from those around you.

Definition of Rest (v): cease work or movement in order to relax, refresh oneself or recover strength, a peace of mind or spirit

WHY IT’S IMPORTANT TO REST

·      A well-rested mind equals a more productive day

·      Renews your strength

·      It allows you to refocus

·      It’s biblical

·      Recharges the mind and body

·      Allows time to remind yourself of what’s important

HOW TO FIND REST

·      Sleep  I’m sure we all know sleep is important, and getting an adequate amount of it each night is vital to our health- physically, mentally and emotionally. Pro tip: A quick 10-15 minute cat nap during the day can do wonders, trust me.

·      Be Silent Sometimes you just need a moment to sit in silence and solitude to collect your thoughts, take a deep breath and slow down.

·      Get active I’m sure you’re thinking, “I thought rest was supposed to be the lack of activity?” Well, yes, but being active can also be a way to unwind, and it doesn’t have to be strenuous. Think about taking a leisurely walk, going on a swim or doing stretches to relax and loosen your muscles.

·      Prioritize– Don’t let your to-do list become overwhelming. Make sure you prioritize what needs to be done. Then, do what needs to be done without procrastinating (something I’m bad about, oops) because it can add unneeded stress.

·      Set aside time  Don’t neglect to reconnect with those closest to you. Our relationships with others refresh and refuel us, especially with those who listen and speak life into us.

·      Abide in the Lord – If we are not careful, the rush and distractions in this world will make us lose sight of our most important source of rest- Jesus. We are called to abide in Him (John 15) and “be still” (Psalm 46:10) in His presence. We receive rest in Him when we are seeking Him in His Word and spending moments alone with Him. He is a faithful Father who will renew our strength (Isaiah 40:31) when we are “weary and burdened” (Matthew 11:28) and fill us with His peace (Philippians 4:7).
